Norwegian Cruise Line vessel Dawn Gastro intestinal outbreak

We are on the Norwegian Cruise Line vessel Dawn. The ship has an active GI outbreak.

We were supposed to disembark today in Mauritius. We have just been informed, that we will not be able to disembark due to the outbreak for at least 24 to 48 hours. The Captain has been extremely cagey about any information as to when they were aware of the outbreak.

I know for certain they knew 2 days after we left Cape Town, the cruise starting port,as I had spoken to ship’s doctor on another matter. The Captain should have informed all crew and passengers of this outbreak, so we could have all exercised a higher degree of caution, such as frequent hand washing and awareness of surface contamination, door handles, elevator buttons etc. Perhaps face masks if you like.

I am aware this is not an airborne disease, but any heightened caution can’t be a bad thing. The passengers became suspicious yesterday when the Reunion Islands port of call was cancelled entirely. The Captain could not been more vague or misleading, simply saying the ship was denied entry, absolutely no other explanation given.

A passenger had said they had received a call from their excursion tour provider, informing them of the cancellation and that the ship would not be docking. The passenger went to the Service Desk to inquire about notice of cancellation by the tour provider, and denied it , the Desk said we would in fact be docking. So they lied. The tour provider could only have received this information from the ship itself, yet made the decision not inform us the passengers.

This is the terminus of the cruise here in Mauritius, many flying home or onto other vacation reservations here on Mauritius. Not to mention all of those due to board the ship today for the beginning of their cruise back to Cape Town. It really is hard to imagine how this could been handled more poorly.

The Captain and Norwegian Cruise Line, need to know, that in this day and age, it’s a huge mistake to lie or conceal facts to your passengers. The truth always comes out at some point and will look far worse, than if they would have just been honest and straightforward from the start. Much better to take a slap in the face than be knocked out. Never again NCL
