Both were tortured by Russian soldiers and lost 20-30 pounds while in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A pair of American veterans, taken prisoner while fighting for Ukraine, said Russian captors relentlessly tortured them to the point where they &#8220;prayed for death,&#8221; according to a broadcast interview aired Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/american-pows-fighting-ukraine-prayed-death-fearing-never-come-home-rcna52071?cid=sm_npd_nn_tw_ma\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/american-pows-fighting-ukraine-prayed-death-fearing-never-come-home-rcna52071?cid=sm_npd_nn_tw_ma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nbcnews.com<\/a> Andy Tai Ngoc Huynh, 27, and Alexander John-Robert Drueke, 40,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/two-american-soldiers-10-foreign-fighters-released-russia-rcna48797\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">were released last month<\/a>\u00a0after spending three months in brutal Russian custody, they told ABC&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GMA\/status\/1580531133862780929?s=20&amp;t=TodzbBqJjsDDVfsnPy4nlw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Good Morning America<\/a>&#8221; in their first TV interview since being released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even after their release had been secured through back channel Saudi Arabian negotiators, their most harrowing moments came at the end of captivity, the former prisoners said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Captors tied them up, blindfolded with packing tape, secured bags over their heads and stacked them in back of a truck, the former prisoners said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We prayed for death&#8221; at that moment, Huynh said. &#8220;We just wanted to die. We just wanted it to end.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fact they were about to go free didn&#8217;t lessen their despair in those final hours of captivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Even if it is an exchange (of prisoners), I don&#8217;t care. This just has to stop,&#8221; Drueke said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Huynh added: &#8220;We wanted to die. The process to getting free was a very high price.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pair didn&#8217;t totally understand their ordeal was done until they met with American officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I didn&#8217;t fully believe that I was getting released until a U.S. embassy representative said, &#8216;This is real brother. You are being exchanged.
